History of Port Angeles

The city’s population as listed in the US Census of 2010 totals 19,038 people. The city received its name in 1862 from Puerto de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles by Spanish mariners. It is home to one of the largest prehistoric Indian villages, including a very large Indian burial ground found in the United States. During a $275 million dollar construction job, the US Army Corps uncovered about 300 graves and 785 pieces of human bones as well as many magnificent artifacts.

Fairchild International Airport is the biggest airport in the Olympic Peninsula. It has a runway of 6,350 feet, which provides access for every variation of aircraft. The international airport was named after William R. Fairchild.

A ferry provides travel to and from Victoria, Canada. The ferry named “Coho” provides a year-round passenger and vehicle service. It arrives and departs from downtown and reservations are always accepted. If you happen to be trying to get around the city, the Clallam Transit System is a scheduled year round public bus services that can get you to almost anywhere in the community.
